As part of the Prison Bed Capacity Program (PBCP), the Shortland Correctional Centre at Cessnock NSW, was expanded to include additional beds for 330 inmates, with associated facilities. With the new accommodation constructed alongside the existing 250-bed facility, the Correctional Centre is now an integrated 580-bed maximum security facility.

Project Overview

The project scope comprised three modular accommodation buildings; sport and exercise areas; a movement control and satellite health clinic building; a 4,000 sqm industries and programs building; modifications to the existing 250-Bed maximum security reception, visits and gatehouse buildings; new administration and pre-visits buildings; a new central stores building; car parking and breaking through an existing perimeter wall to join the existing and new centres together.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure provided project management services to the Department of Communities and Justice including facilitating effective communication between the project’s stakeholders to ensure minimal disruptions to the operations of the existing centre; design development; GC21contract administration; construction management; and management of the defect’s liability period.

Key Challenge

Careful planning and execution was needed to ensure that security was maintained while working in the live correctional centre environment. Particular challenges included cutting over from the existing Security Control Room to a new Control Room; the simultaneous breakthrough of the perimeter wall of the existing centre at three separate locations; and managing the traffic between two separate construction sites.
