As part of the Prison Bed Capacity Program (PBCP), the Bathurst Correctional Centre, at Bathurst NSW, was expanded with the addition of a new 220-bed maximum security compound and supporting ancillary infrastructure. The PBCP has delivered a number of projects that address the shortfall in inmate bed capacity in prisons across NSW.

Project Overview

The project scope included the demolition of existing buildings and construction of the new maximum security wing as well as: a new central store, administration building, master control room, gatehouse, visitors building, reception, health services, education building, and staff and visitor parking. A new perimeter road and fencing was also built with modifications made to the entry road. In addition, the heritage-listed perimeter wall was broken through to join the existing and new compounds together.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure provided project management services to the Department of Communities and Justice which involved facilitating effective communication between the project’s stakeholders to ensure minimal disruptions to the operations of the existing centre; design development; GC21contract administration; construction management; and management of the defect’s liability period.

Key Challenge

The key challenge was to plan and execute the works within a live correctional centre environment. This included cutting over from the existing Security Control Room to a new Control Room and breaking through the heritage perimeter wall to join the new and the old centres together, all while the facility remained operational.
