Melbourne Airport had been achieving consistently strong growth in international passenger numbers over a number of years prior to restrictions being placed on travel due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In order to accommodate the increased numbers, additional capacity in the Terminal 2 (T2) International Arrivals Hall was identified as being necessary. The improved T2 Arrivals Hall is intended to deliver better services – including vertical transport and retail offerings – to streamline passenger arrivals and improve the overall customer journey experience.

Project Overview

The T2 Arrivals Hall redevelopment includes an expansion of the building, new escalators, a central exit of arriving passengers from the Customs and Baggage Reclaim hall, and reconfigured and improved retail facilities and amenities

Our Role

RP Infrastructure (RPI) was engaged by Melbourne Airport to provide design management and project management services for the feasibility, schematic and design development phases of the project. RP was also engaged to provide procurement services and construction contract administrator services for the construction and DLP phases.

Key Challenge

The redevelopment of the Arrivals Hall is a significant undertaking for the Airport. The design had to accommodate an existing 40-year-old road structure overhead and significant existing services in-ground, whilst still achieving the client’s desired improvements. The construction phase is being implemented in stages with Stage 1 completed in November 2020 and Stage 2, including the retail facilities and amenities, due for completion in April 2021.
