The major expansion of Melbourne Airport’s International Terminal 2 between 2008 and 2012 necessitated the modification and expansion of the existing Baggage Reclaim Hall to incorporate two additional baggage carousels.

Project Overview

The works on the Reclaim Hall included complex modifications to existing services and the plant room to open up the floor plan and improve passenger circulation in the area. Ultimately the 6th & 7th carousels project contributed to Melbourne Airport being named the category winner for Capital City Airport of the Year in 2012.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged by Melbourne Airport to review the previous high-level master plan and undertake feasibility, options analysis and make recommendations. We then managed the design concept through schematic design, design development and documentation, managed the project’s stakeholders including Australian Customs, procured and managed the design consultants, developed a detailed program and staging requirements, prepared tender documentation, managed the negotiation of the GMP construction contract and managed the construction contract.

Key Challenge

In the 24/7 operating environment of the airport, the project necessitated a very ambitious program and a complex construction staging program.
