As part of efforts to enhance overall airport operations and optimise the passenger experience within International Terminal 2 (T2), Melbourne Airport sought to add a new dedicated trolley lift to connect the basement level tunnel with the arrivals and departures halls, thus allowing for more efficient re-circulation of baggage trolleys within the terminal.

Project Overview

The project included the installation of a new dedicated trolley lift, and to facilitate the lift’s installation the existing tunnel was extended 15 metres west. In addition, two outbound and one inbound baggage conveyor lines were reconfigured within the mezzanine level, while the ‘rush bag room’ and the existing baggage services desk were relocated.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure (RPI) was engaged by Melbourne Airport to provide design management and project management services for the feasibility, schematic design and design development phases, to be completed in conjunction with the T2 Arrivals Redevelopment project. RP was then engaged to provide procurement services and construction superintendency services for the construction and DLP phases.

Key Challenge

A key challenge was the reconfiguration of the two outbound and one inbound baggage conveyor lines to facilitate space for the new trolley lift to be constructed. RPI undertook stakeholder engagement and employed specific communications strategies to ensure that airport operations were not impacted by the conveyor outages while the reconfiguration works were completed.
