Airports are no longer just transport nodes with efficient movement of passengers and baggage as their sole purpose. The concept of customer experience and treating travellers as guests is at the focus during the design creation process for airport projects. Furthermore, airports are often the first and last impression of a location and creating a sense of place within an airport is an increasingly popular trend.

Project Overview

Melbourne Airport is the second busiest in Australia. Due to its continued growth, the airport has undertaken several expansion and upgrade projects which include multiple retail precincts.

Our Role

Since 2008 Root Partnerships (RP) has advised on and managed multiple projects for Melbourne Airport, these include five individual and distinct retail precincts with over 100 retail tenancies. These tenancies range from passenger lounges, cafes, bars, and duty-free shops to specialty retail. The retail precincts aim to enhance the passenger experience by providing a positive impression of Melbourne’s distinctive identity. Retail design provides opportunities for expression of individuality amongst retailers to capture their brand; an authentic sense of place; and promoting a sense of expectation within the different zones. RP provided project management services throughout the design, procurement and delivery stages of the projects. This included the role of Retail Tenancy Coordinator, development of the Retail Concession Design & Fit Out Requirements Manual, and in conjunction with the design team, a Retail Precinct Design Guide.

Key Challenge

These documents ensured consistent fit-out standards for all the retail Concessions and defined the base building provisions and access requirements for working at Melbourne Airport.
