Sutherland Entertainment Centre (SEC) is owned and operated by Sutherland Shire Council (SSC). Its primary purpose is to provide community-based performances and medium-sized commercial entertainment events. The 40-year-old building had a number of functional limitations and ongoing maintenance concerns, so SCC elected to complete a comprehensive refurbishment to meet the current and future community needs.

Project overview

Council used this opportunity to redefine SEC as a cultural venue that provides the community with opportunities for active engagement with the performing arts irrespective of age, background or ability. The project provides a rich and engaging theatre experience that is accessible to all and enhances and activates the surrounding urban context.

Our role

RP Infrastructure (RPI) provided project management services and was responsible for the management of the project from concept design, through to delivery, completion, commissioning and handover. RPI defined the delivery strategy and was key to the appointment of the lead design consultant through a competitive tendering process.

Key challenge

The challenge of this project was to meet the vision and functional aspirations within the framework of a value-for-money solution. This was a significant investment that Council made on behalf of the community so a rigorous approach to consultation and communication was key to overcoming challenges. Working with an existing building provided an additional layer of complexity.
