The redevelopment of the Melbourne Showgrounds – a joint venture project between the Department of Primary Industries and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria – provided an opportunity to introduce environmentally sustainable designs to deliver a quality, versatile exhibition precinct capable of hosting events and functions throughout the year as well as the annual Royal Melbourne Show.

Project Overview

The project’s key aims were to enhance the annual Royal Melbourne Show, improve links between urban and rural Victoria, help Victoria’s agribusiness sector grow, and create a flexible, multipurpose events and exhibition precinct.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged by Major Projects Victoria to develop a business case and conduct market research into event and venue management, manage the preparation of a master plan, and prepare operational and functional briefings for the public private partnership (PPP) procurement process. RP Infrastructure acted as the single point of contact for stakeholders, providing strategic advice across a number of key disciplines. We were subsequently engaged as technical advisor for the PPP tender and award.

Key Challenge

In re-establishing the Showgrounds as a venue-driven business whilst maintaining an iconic and successful event such as the Royal Melbourne Show, as well as working with multiple associations, the team at the RASV and the broader project team were both challenging and rewarding
