Melbourne’s Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) completes the urban renewal of the Yarra River’s edge linking Southbank to Docklands, and creates a commercial and lifestyle district along the river to the bay’s edge and port districts. MCEC comprises the Exhibition Centre, completed in 1996, and the Convention Centre which opened in 2009 on land adjacent to the Exhibition Centre.

Project Overview

The Convention Centre comprises a 5500+ seat Plenary Hall that can be divided into three separate theatres, thirty-two meeting rooms of various sizes and a grand banquet room as well as a hotel, office, residential and retail spaces.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged as the technical manager for the Convention Centre development. As such Root Partnerships was responsible for the management of all technical consultants in the development of an extensive project functional brief, preparation of a site master plan and detailed site constraints report, request for proposal documentation for the tender phase and the co-ordination of the evaluation phase of each proposal and contract negotiation with short-listed proponents. The project was undertaken within a Partnerships Victoria framework.

Key Challenge

The MCEC development brought together a large multi-disciplinary team to create a reference design and site masterplan to guide the development of this important site. In addition to activating the Yarra River’s edge, the outcome is a world-class and much-awarded conference and convention facility, with integrated heritage buildings and significant commercial and retail development following its completion.
