The Hilton Hotel at the airport was delivered by RP Infrastructure (RPI) under a two-stage process in which stage 1 provided a multi-storey short-stay carpark with a structural system that could facilitate a future sub-terrain train station and hotel development.

Our Role

Four years after completing the car park project, RPI was engaged as the client representative and project manager for the design and construction of the 276 key Hilton (now Parkroyal) Hotel. The project was delivered through a design and construct contract with the requirement for the new hotel to be built on top of the completed multi-level short term car park located adjacent to terminal facilities at Melbourne Airport.  RPI worked closely with the airport and the hotel operator to ensure that all aspects of the project delivered met the financial and operations requirements of both parties.

RPI was responsible for all elements of contractor and client liaison and had direct responsibility to ensure impacts on airport operations were minimised. The project was completed within budget and program.

Key Challenge

As the hotel was built on top of the completed fully operational car park and close to a very busy international airport operating 24 hours a day, control of pedestrian and vehicle traffic and safety within the precinct needed to be carefully managed through a complex staging and communications strategy
