Sutherland Entertainment Centre (SEC) is owned and operated by Sutherland Shire Council (SSC). Its primary purpose is to provide community-based performances and medium sized commercial entertainment events. This 40-year-old building has a number of functional limitations and ongoing maintenance concerns, so SCC has elected to complete a comprehensive refurbishment to meet the current and future community needs.

Project overview

Council is using this opportunity to redefine SEC as a cultural venue that will provide the community with opportunities for active engagement with the performing arts irrespective of age, background or ability. The project aims to provide a rich and engaging theatre experience that is accessible to all and enhance and activate the surrounding urban context.

Our role

RP Infrastructure is providing project management services and is responsible for the management of the project from concept design, through delivery, completion, commissioning and handover. To date Root Partnerships has defined the delivery strategy and been key to the appointment of the lead design consultant through a competitive tendering process.

Key challenge

The challenge of this project is to meet the vision and functional aspirations within the framework of a value for money solution. This is a significant investment that Council is making on behalf of the community so a rigorous approach to consultation and communication is key to overcoming these challenges. Working with an existing building provides an additional layer of complexity.
