School Infrastructure NSW acquired the Old Kings School site in Parramatta in 2015. With the growth and urban renewal of Parramatta City Centre and Parramatta North the adaptive reuse of this unique and significant heritage site will assist in meeting the anticipated increase in demand for school spaces in the area.

Project Overview

The O’Connell Street Public School is being developed on the Old Kings School site, providing accommodation for 1000 kindergarten to year 6 students. The existing site comprises a number of important heritage buildings and features which will be adaptively repurposed. The school will comprise 40 classrooms, a resource centre, hall, COLA and associated administration and support spaces suitable for 21st century learning.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was commissioned to provide project management services to School Infrastructure NSW. The project was delivered via a fully-documented, construct-only procurement route. We were responsible for ensuring the design team fulfilled their contractual obligations in the development of a design that met School Infrastructure NSW’s stringent standards, and that the contractor fulfilled all its obligations in the construction phases.

Key Challenge

The school’s design incorporates flexible teaching spaces with adaptable room configurations designed to achieve a high level of acoustic performance and to provide a rich technological learning environment. The integration of this ‘future-focused’ pedagogy with the fabric of the heritage buildings, some of which were in a state of significant disrepair, was a key challenge faced by the project team.
