The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre (BMCC) showcases the unique artistic life, environment and culture of the Blue Mountains region of NSW, and provides a community and cultural meeting place for the city of Katoomba. The Cultural Centre features a world heritage interpretive centre, regional city art gallery, new public library, a theatrette, multi-purpose workshops, public art courtyards, gallery shop and cafe.

Project Overview

Unusually, the Cultural Centre is located above a retail centre with two levels offering 359 undercover parking spaces and a retail development incorporating a Coles supermarket and 17 specialty retail shops. The development employs environmentally sustainable design principles and state of the art technology.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged by the BMCC as the project coordinator responsible for the design and construction of the BMCC as part of a public-private partnership between the State government, local government and the Coles Development Group. We prepared the technical brief and assisted in the execution of the agreement between the three parties and ultimately acted as the Council’s representative facilitating design refinements and ensuring that the DA was consistent with project requirements. Our role was later expanded to include acting for all parties for the design and construction management of the entire project.

Key Challenge

Client and community relationships were integral to the success of this project and RP Infrastructure worked closely with all parties to ensure the Cultural Centre benefitted all and at the same time delivered a unique community facility in a sensitive location adjacent to a World Heritage site.
