Sydney Metro City and Southwest (Sydney Metro) will deliver 30 kms of metro rail between Chatswood and Bankstown, including a new crossing beneath Sydney Harbour; new railway stations in the lower North Shore and CBD, and the upgrade and conversion of the current line between Sydenham and Bankstown Stations.

Project Overview

Central Station, one of the most important elements of the Sydney Metro, is a highly complex brownfield project situated in an operational live environment. The project involves multi modal transport integration with Suburban and InterCity rail services, bus, coach and light rail, providing a transport hub which additionally accommodates and supports major special events.
The scope of works for Central Station includes construction of cut and cover metro station box with a depth of approximately 25 metres located beneath existing platforms 13-15, a refurbished Northern Station Entrance, and a new Eastern Station entrance with a 19m wide pedestrian connection mined under the operational suburban platforms.

Our Role

In its first phase of the project, RP Infrastructure provided project development services to Sydney Metro to define the scope of works, develop the construction methodology, assess the operational and customer impacts, program, cost and delivery strategy for the development of the business case. They also played a key role in engaging with Sydney Trains and NSW Trains to assess and mitigate the customer and operational impacts of the proposed works.

Involvement on the project continued through the provision of Project Management services for the early works and transaction phase through to contract award and commencement of delivery. This role included managing Transport Operator interfaces and developing a Construction Access Strategy to protect transport operations and customer service.

RP Infrastructure was engaged by Sydney Trains to perform the role of Senior Design Coordinator, managing the interface between Metro design team and Sydney Trains/NSW Trains as the Operator & Maintainer. A significant portion of the New Central station is handed back to Sydney Trains post construction and hence management of this interface is critical for effective asset handover and ultimately project success.
