Sydney Gateway

Project Background
Sydney Gateway provides the strategic link between the WestConnex motorway network and Sydney Airport, with improved connectivity to Port Botany, and high-capacity direct road connections to the International and Domestic Terminals. The project also included significant rail elements, with the duplication of a 3km section of the Port Botany Freight Line delivered by ARTC, to provide improved capacity and reliability of rail services between Port Botany and inland intermodal terminals.
By expanding and improving the existing road and freight rail networks, Sydney Gateway has reduced congestion by taking a significant number of heavy vehicles off the local Mascot road network which has improved travel times and has returned local streets to the community.
Project Overview
Sydney Gateway connects St Peters Interchange to Qantas Avenue and Airport Drive via multiple bridges, viaduct structures and embankments. The corridor required the relocation and protection of a number of major utilities, upgrades to local road networks and bridge structures (O’Riordan and Robey Street), protection of heritage Alexandra Canal embankments, management of flood plains, and traffic management to ensure that critical port, airport, rail and industrial operations were not interrupted.
Our Role
RP Infrastructure (RPI) was involved in the Sydney Gateway project from its early conception, with our team’s roles spanning project inception through development and delivery. Our first role was the Project Director, leading the team through the initial corridor selection and design options assessment, business case, property acquisition and approvals phases. Subsequent roles included: transaction management, constructability and planning advice, stakeholder and interface management (including with ARTC for rail works), design coordination, assurance and governance support, environmental management, and procurement and contract management. RPI also provided support to Sydney Airport to manage its interface with the Sydney Gateway project through to operational readiness and asset handover.
Key Challenge
The Sydney Gateway project’s key challenge was its close proximity to Sydney Airport and the ARTC rail assist and the ensuing need to ensure that structures and construction activities did not impinge on the operational, safety or security requirements of Australia’s busiest airport or a key rail freight asset. Design and construction solutions had to be found to ensure that complex structures, capable of spanning Alexandra Canal and the freight line, could be safely built without interfering with aircraft flight paths. An additional challenge resulted from the project being constructed on NSW and Commonwealth lands which each required a complex approvals pathway of NSW State, Commonwealth EPBC and Airport Act approvals.
