Since opening in 1975, the 147-bed Moorabbin Hospital has become one of Victoria’s leading medical and research facilities, building a tradition of high quality care and providing a range of acute medical and elective surgical services to its community. Moorabbin Hospital is also home to the Monash Cancer Centre, the regional offices of the Southern Melbourne Integrated Cancer Service BreastScreen Victoria.

Project Overview

A high-level cost planning and feasibility study identified opportunities for the expansion of the medical imaging centre and outpatient facilities at Moorabbin Hospital and in 2014 government funds were committed for the expansion. The project comprises: more consulting examination rooms; expanded waiting area and support facilities for the outpatients; new PET, CT and MRI and support facilities; increased office accommodation; increased bed holding capacity; and reconfiguration of the medical imaging department to improve patient and staff flows.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged by the Department to provide project management services across all stages from schematic design through design development, preparation of contract documentation, contract administration, project management during construction, management of the defects liability period and the conduct of post-occupancy evaluations. The works are due for completion in late 2017.

Key Challenge

Given the requirements for the works to be undertaken within an operational hospital environment, the design has taken into consideration staging of the works to minimise this impact, with a construction focus on mitigation of noise, vibration, operational continuity and infection control.
