The Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market and the National Flower Centre needed to relocate from their existing site in West Melbourne to a new purpose-built facility on a 133 hectare site in Epping. This was a development that would transform and sustain the future operation of the market.
Project Overview
Root Partnerships was engaged over a ten year period to lead the consultant team in the planning, consultation with market community, development of the masterplan and functional briefs and provide ongoing technical advisory services in the delivery phase for the new Melbourne Wholesale Market. The project required involved and in-depth stakeholder consultation and engagement, master planning, the creation of a state-of-the art logistics platform and ultimately the relocation of more than 600 tenants and businesses.
Our Role
RP Infrastructure was commissioned to undertake an extensive stakeholder consultation program and conduct a national and international research tour. As a result, we developed the masterplan, functional and operational design briefs for the project. We also managed a team of specialist consultants to prepare detailed tender specifications, were part of the evaluation panels for the Request for Tender proposals, and acted as the key Technical Advisor throughout the facility’s construction and commissioning phases. We then acted as Tenancy Coordinator for the move to Epping, preparing tenancy designs, obtaining the relevant approvals and facilitating and supervising each specific fit-out for over 150 individual tenant businesses.
Key Challenge
The diverse and complex nature of the stakeholder environment, managed over several years with a focus on transition of a number of businesses amidst cultural change, provided a unique – and ultimately rewarding – challenge.
