The Queensland Department of Education delivered a new Performing Arts Centre at Kedron State High School to replace outdated facilities and support the school’s growing Music and Arts program.

Located in Kedron, QLD, the project involved demolition of existing buildings (Blocks I and J) and the delivery of a purpose-built, contemporary facility featuring a performance hall for over 300 people, flexible teaching and rehearsal spaces, drama and dance studios, and specialist support areas including dressing rooms, storage and staff facilities.

The project also included temporary relocation of music and arts functions during construction, with subsequent upgrades to existing buildings to create new general learning areas and staff facilities.

The Challenge

The Performing Arts Centre was delivered within a live school environment, requiring careful staging and coordination to minimise disruption to students, staff and school operations. Construction also required the demolition of existing buildings and temporary relocation of key teaching functions, while maintaining continuity of the school’s Music and Arts program.

Delivering a flexible performing arts facility within a live school environment

DCWC provided Project Management, Superintendent and Quantity Surveying services, supporting the Queensland Department of Education through the delivery of a flexible, purpose-built performing arts facility.

The design integrates performance and learning environments, with retractable seating and operable spaces allowing the auditorium to be reconfigured into multiple teaching areas. Careful planning and coordination ensured the safe delivery of works within an operational school, including temporary accommodation for teaching spaces and staged upgrades to existing facilities.

The result is a contemporary, high-quality facility that enhances teaching, performance and day-to-day functionality across the campus.
