Gunnedah Hospital Redevelopment

The NSW Government has committed $53 million to redevelop the Gunnedah Hospital campus. The project forms part of an extensive program of capital works being delivered across the Hunter New England Local Health District.
Project Overview
The redevelopment will deliver a new acute services building on the existing hospital campus, connecting with the existing hospital, and includes:
- Expanded emergency department
- Birthing, maternity and inpatient unit
- A new main entry and reception
- Ambulance bays
- Landscaped courtyards.
The new facility will offer contemporary resources to support best practice models of care and provide patients, families and carers a first-class facility to meet the health needs of the community now and into the future.
Gunnedah Hospital will continue to function as a District Hospital and remain networked to Tamworth Hospital for access to specialist services.
Our Role
RP Infrastructure (RPI) is commissioned by Health Infrastructure NSW (HINSW) to provide comprehensive project management and facility planning services to manage all stages of the works including planning and design (including Early Contractor Involvement), Procurement, Construction of Early Works and Main works and commissioning activities. The engagement includes extensive consultation with local hospital stakeholders such as staff, consumers and local community groups including Aboriginal members, achieved through a Connecting with Country initiative in partnership with our client Health Infrastructure.
Key Challenge
The planning and design of the project was successfully delivered on a constrained brownfield site, carefully integrated around existing hospital facilities. This was achieved through early and sustained stakeholder engagement, ensuring that clinical operations could be maintained throughout the design and construction phases. The construction works are being carried out within a fully operational hospital, requiring detailed coordination to avoid disruptions to patient care.
Limited space has added complexity, particularly in relation to staging and logistics. The decanting process is being meticulously planned to ensure the safe relocation of critical equipment and uninterrupted service delivery. RPI’s proactive stakeholder engagement and strong collaboration with hospital staff and the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) have been instrumental in achieving positive outcomes, delivering the project on time, within budget, and with minimal disruption to hospital operations.
