The Sydney Swans’ training activities had to be relocated from the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) to Tramway Oval due to the construction of the new Sydney Football Stadium. However, the existing Tramway Oval was not a full AFL size training oval and needed to be expanded which impacted on the existing Bus Interchange.

Project Overview

To facilitate the Sydney Swans training relocation, Tramway Oval was required to be reconstructed and expanded to accommodate the technical requirements of a high-performance training oval to replicate the Etihad Stadium playing surface and dimensions. This also included the relocation of floodlights and installation of new camera infrastructure for training analysis.

Due to the expansion of the existing training oval, the existing event Bus Interchange operated by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) is to be relocated within the site boundary and integrated with the new CBD and South-East Light rail project. The public domain and wayfinding signage will also be upgraded with patron safety and sustainability being paramount.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure (RPI) was engaged by the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust at project inception to produce a project brief and manage the design development to achieve the objectives of multiple stakeholders including Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust, Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Sydney Swans. RP Infrastructure services included the procurement and management of all design consultants, procurement of a Head Contractor and act as the Principal’s Representative (superintendent) during the construction phase. RP also managed and obtained planning approval on behalf of the Client.

RPI was also tasked with identifying a location for a temporary event bus interchange that met TfNSW requirements and allowed the construction works to be undertaken.

RPI undertook extensive stakeholder engagement to ensure the project meets the stakeholder objectives whilst being delivered within a strict budget, timeframe and in a live sporting environment.

Key Challenge

RPI was engaged in late June 2018 with the key deliverable to complete the training oval by the end of February 2019. This was achieved by fast tracking the program.

The construction works occurred during the peak sporting calendar at Moore Park including cricket, AFL, NRL, Rugby Union and A-league events.

Additionally, extensive planning and methodology refinement was required due to the adjacent Light Rail construction site and Allianz Stadium demolition occurring concurrently.
