Improving the journey to Melbourne Airport

At a glance

Melbourne Airport’s Naarm Way Stage 2 is transforming how passengers and visitors access Terminals 1, 2 and 3, with a new elevated road network and dedicated pick-up and drop-off facilities designed to improve traffic flow, pedestrian safety and the overall airport experience.

The project includes new pedestrian bridges, intelligent transport systems, traffic management infrastructure and improved wayfinding, creating more direct connections between the new facilities and the terminal precinct.

The Challenge

Delivering major road and passenger infrastructure within a fully operational airport required careful planning and coordination to maintain safe access for passengers, visitors and vehicles throughout construction.

The project involved complex interfaces between civil and building works, existing road networks, pedestrian connections and airport operations. Construction staging, testing and commissioning needed to be carefully managed to minimise disruption while preparing the new facilities for operation.

A critical challenge was the final overnight transition, which required multiple teams to coordinate changes to traffic arrangements, signage and operational systems ahead of the public opening.

Our solution

RP Infrastructure provided client-side project management services across design, procurement, planning & staging, construction, commissioning and operational readiness.

Working closely with Melbourne Airport, our team coordinated project delivery, managed programme, cost, risk and commercial requirements, and oversaw critical construction and operational interfaces.

Our team played a key role in coordinating the final transition to the new facilities, bringing together contractors, airport operations and other stakeholders to support testing, commissioning and operational readiness.

Through careful planning, clear governance and close collaboration, we helped Melbourne Airport successfully open the new facilities while maintaining essential airport operations, delivering improved access and connectivity for passengers and visitors.

“The opening of Naarm Way Stage 2 is a significant milestone in improving access to Melbourne Airport. Delivering this project within a live airport environment required careful planning and close collaboration across the entire delivery team. RP Infrastructure played an important role in coordinating the project and supporting a smooth transition to the new facilities, helping us deliver a better experience for passengers and visitors.”
