Macquarie University 2IR Bio Innovation Hub

Supporting Macquarie University’s continued growth in biomedical research
At a glance
Macquarie University’s new Bio Innovation Hub at its Wallumattagal Campus in Sydney strengthens the University’s capacity to attract leading researchers and industry partners. The three-level fitout includes laboratories designed to meet Physical Containment Level 2 (PC2) and Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) certification requirements, alongside reception, workspaces, clinic and consultation areas and supporting amenities.
The Challenge
Macquarie University needed to deliver a complex biomedical research facility within a compressed seven-month construction program, requiring approvals, procurement and design finalisation to progress in parallel with delivery. The South Wing fitout was completed within an existing cold shell on a live campus, beside an operational research facility in the adjoining North Wing. Safe access and continuity of University operations had to be maintained throughout construction.
Our solution
RP Infrastructure worked closely with Macquarie University to develop an integrated program aligning design, approvals, procurement, construction, commissioning and certification. This gave the project team a clear pathway to complete the facility in early 2026.
Our in-house facility planning specialist led the development of an endorsed functional brief, helping the University confirm end-user requirements early and make informed decisions before the design progressed.
We then facilitated an intensive design development process, including weekly Project User Group sessions, to secure timely input and sign-off from researchers and other end users. Identifying long-lead equipment early allowed procurement, installation, commissioning and certification requirements to be incorporated into the construction program.
To support campus operations, we coordinated a site access strategy and communication protocol for the construction phase. Close collaboration with Macquarie University, the consultant team and FDC Construction & Fitout supported delivery on time and within budget.
“By bringing Macquarie University’s stakeholders, end users and project partners together early, we were able to manage risk, maintain momentum and deliver a specialised facility that will support the University’s continued growth in biomedical research.”
