The 2006 Central Precinct project provided four new buildings around a central atrium, offering a range of student, retail and office accommodation at the Burwood Campus. The Central Precinct Infill Stage 2 delivered a new and improved heart for the campus, linking these four buildings and transforming the current atrium space into a contemporary, flexible hub featuring innovative and informal learning spaces.

Project Overview

Stage 1 of the Infill project provided a new steel and glass roof over the precinct. Stage 2 saw the consultant team enclosing the space with an environmentally responsive louvre façade and a fitout comprising a range of social and study areas across level 2 and the new level 3 mezzanine. The precinct is connected via the integration of technology including digital wayfinding screens, and the construction of an additional pedestrian bridge connecting to Building P.

Our Role

RP Infrastructure was engaged to undertake the role of Superintendent, to provide structure around the ongoing project correspondence and support to the University. This involved focusing discussions on the contract terms and facilitating negotiations between the contractor and the University. On a project with very tight delivery timelines RP Infrastructure managed the acceleration of the construction works, and the associated commercial negotiations.

Key Challenge

The key challenge for the project was meeting the tight program imposed by the University calendar and the requirement to provide student access through the precinct prior to start of the semester in February 2017. This required considerable liaising between all parties to highlight priority requirements, and to ensure a staged handover could be achieved for the priority areas since the project was originally documented as a single stage.
